The Spirit's gift of Understanding

We all like to be understood. There is nothing more painful or frustrating than rejection. Clear communication is essential in a marriage – it builds trust and confidence. A public speaker focuses on sending a message that is clear and understandable. Politicians – well, that may be another matter. In my pastoral ministry, or that of any priest, it is important that we listen carefully and sensitively, communicate the word of God authentically, be open to a variety of viewpoints and opinions (that’s not always easy), and help parishioners to understand the essential truths of our faith. It’s a tall order but clear communication between human beings is basic. If you’re flying at 35,000 feet or find yourself on a battle field, you want to be sure the pilot or leader of the troop clearly understands directions and strategy.

After the gift of Wisdom from the Holy Spirit, we hear of the gift of Understanding. It may seem similar to the gift of Wisdom but it is an essential gift which helps us to “understand” (redundant?) the truths of our faith which wisdom leads us to find. Understanding is a gift “to give a deeper insight and penetration of divine truths held by faith . . .” (Spiritual Theology, Fr. Aumann) While the fullness of truth is yet hidden from our eyes and hearts, to be revealed only in the life to come, with the Spirit’s gift, we come to a deeper understanding of the significance of what we believe. In a sense, we move beyond the surface of things to more deeply penetrate and comprehend the spiritual meaning or purpose of divine revelation.

Jesus spoke so often in simple metaphor or allegory as he explained the mystery of God's plan. His parables are filled with images that explain deep spiritual realities: “The Kingdom of heaven is like . . . A sower went to sow seed . . . a pearl of great price . . .weeds and wheat . . .bread of life . . . yeast in dough . . .I am the vine you are the branches . . .I am the Good Shepherd . . .unless one is born again of water and spirit . ..”

To his audience, it seems some got it (understood) and others did not. Among those who often did not, according to John’s Gospel, were his own Apostles. We hear the frustration of Jesus more than once, “Do you still not understand?” Peter’s sincere but impulsive proclamation of faith, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68). It sounds as if Peter was saying, “Jesus, you have words we do not fully comprehend but they seem to satisfy our deepest longing for meaning and purpose. No one else speaks as you do. Help us understand!”

“Help us understand,” may be the prayer we need to pray. “Come Holy Spirit. Help me to more deeply see and understand the great mysteries of God’s truth and love.” Though we may never fully comprehend the mystery of the Eucharist or the Trinity, the Spirit will guide us to faith that can believe without full comprehension. To be satisfied with the mystery yet understand enough to bring conviction. This Understanding can lead us to see God alive and active, through his Spirit, in our daily lives.

Did you ever wonder why certain events have taken place in your life? Why is this person a new friend? Why did I hear those words in confession? What is the meaning of this event or sudden, unexpected change of plans? Why did I meet this person at this time? How and where can I see and understand the gentle breath of the Spirit in my life, leading me to follow the plan of God?

Jesus promised, “Anyone who loves me will be true to my word, and my Father will love him; we will come to him and make our dwelling place with him . . .” (John 14: 23).

We are not alone. In our search for understanding and truth, God is not above us, under us, or distant and unavailable. He “dwells with us” in our hearts and lives – up close and personal. I find that great truth a comfort that only the Spirit can grant. To Understand the great mysteries of God in a way that strengthens our faith or that provides courage to explain them to those who sincerely seek the truth is the gift of Understanding.

Come Holy Spirit, O most blessed Light divine. Shine within these hearts of yours. And our inmost being fill!
