Review of movie by Bishop Barron:
It seems all the rage for the time being, this new movie put out on Netflix, and many parishioners have asked me if I've seen it: "The Two Popes." That is a fictional portrayal of both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. It is beautifully shot, the actor who portrays Pope Francis in particular could be nearly a twin brother of the real Pope Francis and with Anthony Hopkins acting as Pope Benedict the movie presents a decided bias in favor of Pope Francis.
Bishop Robert Barron has written a fair critique of the film and the link to his article is below. If you haven't seen the film, it might be good to read his review first, then watch the film with a critical eye. There are many good parts, in particular the ones depicting the background of Pope Francis in Argentina, his early life before seminary formation, and his formation towards and love for the poor, his simple lifestyle and his desire to serve the Church in humility.
The images of the Sistine Chapel and the conclave to elect the new Pope after the resignation of Pope Benedict are beautifully done.
Take time to view the film if you can. Let us keep both of these men in our prayers. Pope Francis is the present Holy Father who shepherds Christ's universal Church. The Church is a force for peace and unity on this fractured and troubled planet May the Holy Spirit lead us in this new year of 2020.
