Prayer for Peace in Afghanistan

The horrible situation, catastrophe really, in Afghanistan with the hasty pull out of the American military and its aftermath, has shocked everyone around the world.  Who is responsible, how it was done, and what the aftermath is going to be is on the mind of us all.  Considering the fiery language these days about nearly everything from the vaccine for Covid, which I believe is an answer to our prayers for the end of this virus if only more folks would do so, to politics, religious freedom, education and safe environments, etc, etc. there is no doubt we all share great emotion over what has happened.

I think we often feel, "What can I do?" Well, on a global scale probably nothing unless we're in a position to make a significant difference but on a faith level we can and should do much.  It's sometimes criticized that prayer is good but we need to do more than just pray. While prayer is our best defense why not do all things WITH prayer.

We can still vote in this country and write to those who represent us in the halls of higher government but what we can do right now is to offer a sincere prayer for those in Afghanistan, especially women, children, those who may feel betrayed or trapped and ordinary families who feel powerless. We must pray that somehow God will turn the hearts of those who have now taken over power in the country to be merciful, inclusive, and seek true peace and justice for all. It seems the present tactics of the now leaders in control of the Country are far more aligned with the powers of darkness rather than with those of light to say the least.

May God in his mysterious wisdom and care for all humanity grant us reason for hope, security, and deeper trust in our national leaders at this time who must govern with humility, an open mind and heart, and care for the common good of all despite political backlash.  This is far too critical of a time with its broad implications on global affairs to be guided by political agendas rather than what is best to heal a suffering humanity.

Let us pray . . .

O God, author and giver of peace,

in whose image and likeness each of us has been created

with a human dignity worthy of respect on earth

and destined for eternal glory,

Listen to the cry that rises from every corner

of this fragile earth and the cries of the innocent in Afghanistan

in that nation and the wider region torn by violent conflict:

To our national and world leaders grant the wisdom

to see beyond the boundaries of race, religion, and nation

to that of common humanity that makes us all

your children and brothers and sisters to one another.

To those who have taken up arms in anger or revenge

or even in the cause of justice

grant the grace of conversion to the path of peaceful dialogue

and constructive collaboration.

To those who have already lost their lives

as victims of human cruelty,

open wide your arms and enfold them all

in the embrace of your compassion,

healing and everlasting life.

Grant this through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

Mary, Mother of all and Queen of Peace, pray for us.
